It was decided to introduce the George Hickling Trophy for an important established event which had not previously been recognised in this way\u2014the best gross in the qualifying rounds for the men\u2019s Club Championship.<\/p>\n<p>Qualification for the Championship match play rounds was first conducted in 1910, when the Championship was reintroduced after having not been contested since 1905. Two qualifying rounds were planned for 1910 but abandoned after one \u2013 seemingly due to the high scores in the first round and the poor condition of the course.<\/p>\n<p>The George Hickling Trophy, awarded to the lowest qualifier, therefore dates from 1911. From 1911-1916 it was eighteen holes qualification, and it has been thirty-six holes since 1917.<\/p>\n<p>The trophy was designed by It reflects George Hickling\u2019s long association with the WA Parliament, where he was Usher of the Black Rod for six years, and the importance of Parliamentary staff to the establishment of the Perth Golf Club in 1895.
